The Nikon Coolpix Performance Series, specifically the P900, P1000 and P1100, are the flerf cameras of choice. Dubbed the "globebuster",[2] it is almost a requirement for all flerfs to own one. Flerfs are so mesmerised by the superzoom capabilities, they believe these semi-budget point-and-shoot cameras contain the most advanced technology the human species has ever created.
These cameras are the source of countless flerf claims, most notably the idea that we "see too far" for what the globe predicts.
Background
The P-Series is a line of superzoom CDCs. It was launched in 2012 with the P510, featuring a 24-1000mm eqivalent zoom (42×) and a 16.1MP CMOS sensor. The P-Series is currently the only line of Coolpix cameras still in production, with the P1100 being the current model.

The cameras are able to achieve their superzoom capabilities by employing an incredibly small sensor (16.17×4.45 mm). As a result, it is also fairly low resolution by modern standards (~16 MP). The high zoom is the result of a significant crop factor: the 539mm maximum focal length is equivalent to 3000mm on the P1100. The glass itself isn't all that impressive compared to professional equipment.
Flerf claims
You can zoom ships back over the horizon
Flerfs frequently refer to a video of someone using a P900/P1000 to film a ship, showing it become partially obstructed by the horizon, then "zooming it back in" to where the bottom becomes visible again. [3] [4] [please add more examples] Most flerfs claim to have seen this video, but none can actually show it. It seems to have vanished off the internet, or (more plausibly) it never existed to begin with.
This observation that flerfs are collectively hallucinating is, in reality, optically impossible. Zooming in increases resolution ( to a certain extent), not the proportions of an object that is visible.

NASA paid Nikon to discontinue the P1000
In early 2024, Nikon announced the P1000 was discontinued.[5] As one can imagine for people who treat literally everything as a conspiracy, this announcement about their beloved camera sent flerfs into absolute hysteria. Of course, the only explanation for why Nikon would do something like this is that NASA forced them to because they were worried people were coming too close to the truth.[6] This particular conspiracy arose because it coincided with an agreement between Nikon and NASA, which had absolutely nothing to do the P1000; it was an agreement to develop a new camera for Artemis III.[7] In early 2025, Nikon announced the release of an updated model, the P1100.[8] While this completely discredits the NASA conspiracy theory, it hasn't stopped flerfs speculating that this newer model is intentionally inferior to its predecessor.
