My personal take on TFE is that it is actually a psychological experiment, and like all of these was not exposing the actual intent to the participants, but hiding it behind something else.
Seeing how many major Flerfs have already backpedaled on "there is no 24 hour sun in Antarctica, there can't be as Earth is flat" I personally think that TFE has already achieved its goal long before the actual expedition started ;)
