- The majority of point-to-point distances across the surface of the Earth don't match the distances indicated by the Gleason Map. The difference between the real distance and that indicated by the Gleason Map becomes ridiculously large for longitudinal distances in the Southern Hemisphere. Driving between Adelaide and Melbourne is a not uncommon journey for people living near those two cities and is easily done with a road (travel) distance of less than 800km. The corresponding Gleason Map (LOS) distance is approximately 1600km. The example video is a time-lapse recording of a drive from Adelaide to Melbourne departing soon after dawn and arriving at a destination less than 10km from Melbourne well before sunset the same day.
