Prior to 2026 or so I was ignorant of the level of activity occurring regarding the concept of Flat Earth. I had of course heard about it but assumed it was simply a minor and historical aberration in our understanding of the universe.
I think it was probably a SciManDan offering randomly served up by YouTube that initially piqued my interest in the topic. I was immediately taken aback that someone like Dan had felt the need to have to provide a rebuttal to some nonsense claim that opposed our modern, scientifically determined knowledge and understanding.
So I watched a few more of Dan's videos. Binged, if you will. I was quite frankly dumbfounded at the content that Dan was responding to. "How is this even a thing?" I pondered.
This was a rabbit-hole I had never peered into before but, like Alice, things just got "curiouser and curiouser" and I could not look away from what I was seeing.
To cut a much longer story short - I am now grateful for the likes of SciManDan and MCToon while at the same time being very alarmed that their channels and a site like this is a necessity in this modern day-and-age.
There are many different ways to analyse this situation and I strongly suspect that none of those analyses produce any conclusions that are in any way comforting or reassuring. For now I have elected to summarise it this way:- that the current Flat Earth phenomenon is a reflection - a litmus test if you will - of a severe problem we have as a global society, viz. that some people, for whatever reasons, are easily misled and our society is littered with those that, for whatever reasons, will gladly mislead them.
And to be clear - since I can imagine that some reading this will be inclined to immediately want to argue that there are more important issues to address - I highlight the Flat Earth phenomenon because I view this as something that should absolutely be a "no-brainer" matter. There is so much clear and irrefutable evidence regarding the Earth and where it sits in the universe that I simply find it incredible that this is even something I'm writing about at this very moment.
Given that possibly as many as all of the other ills of our world require careful, convincing arguments to accompany any "hard" evidence that might exist if we are to be able to successfully address them, that we remain faced with this highly active group of people who can so successfully propagate their own version of "truth" I think underlines a fundamental societal problem.
It is my hope that finding a solution to this problem may well seed the way to tackling the arguably much more important and urgent ills that we continue to be plagued with.
