Rockets easily work in a vacuum. "How Stuff Works" explains it well. [1] It's an application of Newton's laws of motion, not a violation.

Fuel requirements grow with mass, not distance. Almost all the fuel is used to get the rocket into orbit. After that only very little fuel is needed as there is no air resistance in space.
