Chris Vanam is a Canadian flat Earther who is primarily active on TikTok. Critics sometimes refer to him as Chris Van Dumb, generally in response to his repeated difficulty with right-triangle geometry and his insistence that conventional mathematics is incorrect.
Chris is known for displaying a graph-paper drawing in which Polaris appears to physically descend toward Earth's surface as an observer moves farther away. Although he has been shown the correct right-triangle geometry, he continues to present his diagram as evidence against the globe.
Chris has never publicly presented an original measurement or experiment demonstrating a flat Earth. His most significant opportunity to conduct a long-distance observation occurred when Dirt Cuz reportedly paid to fly him to Hawaii and supplied expensive observational equipment. According to critics, the resulting observations aligned with globe-Earth predictions, although Chris continues to describe them as evidence for flat Earth.
Chris also uses biblical arguments when supporting flat Earth, although his commitment to religious reasoning appears inconsistent. He has additionally been accused of posting antisemitic material while describing himself as merely anti-Zionist, making misogynistic comments toward women, and relying on personal insults when unable to answer an argument.

Flat Earth claims
Polaris physically descends with distance
Chris frequently presents a drawing on graph paper that is intended to explain how the observed altitude of Polaris changes as an observer travels north or south.
In Chris's drawing, the line representing Polaris appears to physically descend toward Earth's surface as the observer moves farther away. He treats this as though Polaris itself must be getting closer to the ground rather than recognizing that the observer's viewing angle is changing.
This interpretation confuses the apparent angle between the observer and Polaris with the physical position of Polaris.
On a spherical Earth, the relevant geometry is a right triangle formed by:
- the observer's position;
- Earth's center; and
- the direction toward Polaris.
The observed altitude of Polaris is approximately equal to the observer's northern latitude. As an observer travels south, Polaris appears lower because the observer's local horizontal reference rotates with Earth's curved surface. Polaris is not physically descending toward Earth.
Chris has been shown correct right-triangle diagrams explaining this relationship but continues to rely on his original graph-paper drawing.[citation needed]

“The math we are taught is wrong”
When established geometry contradicts his diagram, Chris claims that the mathematics taught in schools is wrong and that his preferred interpretation is more accurate.[citation needed]

He has not presented a new mathematical system, demonstrated an error in conventional geometry, or supplied equations that predict observations more accurately than spherical geometry.
Rejecting the established calculation does not validate an alternative. To replace the globe model, Chris would need to provide a flat-Earth model that correctly predicts:
- the observed altitude of Polaris at different northern latitudes;
- the disappearance of Polaris south of the equator;
- the simultaneous appearance of southern celestial objects;
- the rotation of northern and southern stars in opposite directions;
- the changing orientation of the observer's local horizontal; and
- the measured angles between celestial objects from multiple locations.
Chris has not publicly produced such a model.
Lack of original measurements
Chris has not presented a documented original experiment or measurement demonstrating that Earth is flat.
His arguments generally rely on drawings, assertions, biblical interpretations, personal impressions, and material created by other flat Earthers.
A useful experiment would require:
- a specific prediction from the flat-Earth model;
- a competing prediction from the globe model;
- equipment capable of distinguishing between those predictions;
- a documented method;
- original measurements;
- uncertainty and error analysis; and
- results that can be independently reproduced.
Chris has not provided an experiment meeting these requirements.
Hawaii long-distance observations
Trip funded by Dirt Cuz
Dirt Cuz reportedly paid to fly Chris to the island of Hawaii and covered the expenses associated with a series of long-distance observations.[citation needed]

The observations were conducted from the Big Island toward the islands of Lanai and Molokai using an expensive telescope or camera system.
The trip gave Chris an opportunity to collect original measurements using better equipment than is normally available during a TikTok livestream.
Results consistent with the globe
According to critics who reviewed the Hawaii observations, the visible and obstructed portions of the distant islands aligned with globe-Earth predictions.[citation needed]

A proper analysis of this type of observation considers:
- observer height;
- target height;
- geographic distance;
- elevation of visible landmarks;
- camera or telescope height;
- atmospheric refraction;
- weather and temperature gradients;
- the location of the apparent horizon; and
- the amount of the target predicted to be hidden.
Chris has not presented a quantitative flat-Earth calculation that predicts the Hawaii results more accurately than the globe model.
Instead, he continues to describe the observations as evidence for flat Earth without showing how a flat model predicts the measured obstruction or visible elevations.
The trip therefore appears to have produced evidence consistent with a globe after Dirt Cuz paid to fly Chris to Hawaii and supplied the equipment needed to make the observation.
Approach to evidence
Chris's approach generally begins with the conclusion that Earth is flat and then interprets observations to preserve that conclusion.
When the accepted mathematics contradicts his interpretation, he claims that the mathematics is wrong. When an observation matches globe predictions, he asserts that it nevertheless supports flat Earth.
He has not provided a consistent alternative model capable of producing measurable predictions.
This approach makes the flat-Earth claim effectively unfalsifiable. Any result can be declared evidence for flat Earth even when the measurements agree with the globe calculation.
Religious claims
Chris is a fence-sitting religiflurf. He uses the Bible to support flat Earth and refers to himself as someone who reads or follows biblical teachings, but he does not consistently commit to a fully defined biblical cosmology.
He has not demonstrated that the biblical passages he references were intended as technical descriptions of Earth's physical geometry.
Biblical language involving foundations, corners, pillars, or the movement of the Sun is often poetic, observational, symbolic, or written from the perspective of a person standing on Earth's surface.
Chris's appeal to the Bible also conflicts with his reported treatment of other people, particularly women whom he dislikes or with whom he has personal disagreements.
Antisemitism and anti-Zionism
Chris describes himself as anti-Zionist rather than antisemitic. However, he has reportedly posted material targeting Jewish people generally rather than limiting his criticism to the actions or policies of the Israeli government.[citation needed]

Criticizing Zionism or the policies of Israel is not automatically antisemitic. The distinction disappears when criticism is replaced with:
- attacks against Jewish people as an ethnic or religious group;
- collective blame directed at Jewish people;
- claims that Jewish people secretly control governments, banks, or media;
- traditional antisemitic caricatures;
- Holocaust denial or minimization; or
- conspiracy theories based on Jewish identity.
Chris has reportedly posted multiple anti-Jewish TikToks and memes while using the anti-Zionist label to deny that the material is antisemitic.[citation needed]

Relationship with Amazda
Chris previously dated a TikTok flat Earther known as Amazda. Members of the community have alleged that Chris behaved in an emotionally abusive manner during the relationship.[citation needed]

- Chris reportedly knew she was married;
- the poem was several pages long;
- Chris described himself as a “ginger knight”;
- he attempted to redefine “MILF” as “Mother I would forage for”; and
- Succa publicly rejected him.
The “ginger knight” poem remains Chris's most notable known contribution to literature.

Critics have observed that Chris often becomes visibly angry while simultaneously accusing the calmer participant of losing emotional control.
This allows him to avoid the original question by redirecting the discussion toward the other person's supposed emotional state.
Personal insults
Chris commonly relies on insults instead of addressing an argument.
Reported examples include:
- calling opponents virgins;
- calling women bitches;
- mocking women's bodies or appearance;
- accusing people of frothing;
- accusing people of crashing out; and
- using insults associated more closely with middle-school arguments than scientific debate.
None of these statements demonstrate that Earth is flat or identify an error in the globe model.
Avoidance of measurements
When asked for measurements, Chris generally returns to his graph-paper Polaris drawing, biblical arguments, or personal attacks.
He has never publicly completed an original experiment that produces a flat-Earth prediction and compares it with a globe prediction.
Even when Dirt Cuz funded a trip to Hawaii and supplied expensive equipment, Chris did not produce a quantitative flat-Earth model explaining the results.
