An equatorial mount is a type of telescope mount that destroys the absolute shit out of flat Earth. It works by aligning one of its axes (called the "right ascension" axis) with Earth's axis of rotation, then rotating this axis at a steady rate to track the apparent motion of the sky, typically through the use of a motor.[1] It does so without introducing field rotation, because unlike an altazimuth mount, it completely counteracts the effects of Earth's rotation.[2]

Its other axis, called the "declination" axis, allows the mount to point in any direction.

Flerf despair

Flerfs are so clueless as to how they work, the mere mention of an equatorial mount will make them immediately run away or deflect.

Equatorial Mounts WOULDN'T WORK on a Flat Earth (Jan 24, 2023)

All the gear I'm taking for 'The Final Experiment' (Dec 24, 2024)

  • Dave shows the gear he was planning to pack for TFE. He debated being his Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer mount, but was concerned that accurate polar alignment would be difficult in the absence of any stars. He ultimately decided to bring the mount, which ended up being a critical piece of equipment for capturing sunspots.

I challenge Globe deniers to explain the Equinox problem! (Feb 5, 2025)

  • At 1:56, Dave brings up the time at Union Glacier Camp when Jeran asked for an explanation of how his mount works. He ran through the explanation with Jeran, and then with Lisbeth who was also curious, and later in Punta Arenas with Jonathan Mariande. Neither three of the then-flat-earthers could offer a flat Earth explanation. According to Dave, Austin Wisit declined to hear the explanation, but still claimed to have "several possible flat Earth explanations for it" (none of which were actually given).
