NASA Photoshops Earth From Moon

This is one case where the claim is true - the earth was photoshoped into the moon. However, the authors of the photo tell us exactly what they did and why and supply the non-photoshoped version.

Looking Over The Limb page on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter page is the source of the images.

On this page in the middle we can see three images where the authors of the page tell us that "on the right the WAC color (for the Earth only) is overlain on the middle image."

So right there on the page they tell you that they took an image from one camera and adjusted the brightness so you could see more features of the moon and thy overlayed a colour image of the earth taken from a different camera on the same space craft. No fraud. Just some editing to make a prettier image.

Some analysis of this is discussed on LRO earthrise - NASA Fakery - revisit II you tube video by TheTTguy shows that current version of the image of the web site does not show the rectangle under enhanced contrast. But if you go the web archive you can find an older version of the file where enhanced contrast reveals a rectangle.

So the meme was correct. However, what the meme shows is that the LRO people took an image that showed a globe earth taken from the moon and pasted in an image that showed a globe earth also taken from the moon.
