On the globe the Airbus A330-200 variant they were flying on would not make the flight, they would run out of fuel and crash in the ocean. They had to choose some intermediary location to refuel. That location had to be far enough along the route that the second leg of the flight was within the airplane's range. A straight route would fly over central Africa. Countries include Sudan, Central African Republic, The Republic of Congo, and Gabon. If you are familiar with the politics of these countries you would know that they are not reliable places to service large aricraft.

Rome to Buenos Aires is within the airplane's range and Rome is not too far north, so this is a good choice.
