View source for Jeran's umpire show

'''Jeran's umpire show''' is a proposed theatrical signal repertoire for [[Jeran Campanella]]'s post-[[The Final Experiment|TFE]] second act: baseball umpiring with enough personality that leagues keep calling him back. Standard mechanics stay intact. The flourishes below are optional ''performance upgrades'' — the kind of stuff parents film and kids reenact at recess.

This page catalogs '''umpire calls''' with '''1–3 named fun moves''' each. Use at your own risk of becoming the most booked volunteer ump in a three-county radius. (The ice was cold. The strike zone can be warmer.)

== Start of game ==
Before the first pitch, walk up behind the plate and calmly announce "I am present." This is the signature opener: quiet, unmistakable, and just theatrical enough to let everyone know the umpire has entered the universe.

== Why the show ==
Jeran's already proved he can change his mind in public when the evidence shows up. Turning that energy into crisp, entertaining ball/strike theater is a legitimate career pivot: more gigs, more tips from grateful coaches who finally understand the count, slightly fewer "YOU'RE BLIND" chants (results may vary).

== Pitch calls ==

=== Strike ===
* '''The Antarctica Freeze''' — Plant, point, hold the pose like the sun refused to set. Voice: a short, clean "''Strike!''" that carries to the cheap seats.
* '''The Globe Spin Punch''' — Compact fist punch to the side with a half-turn; sells conviction without the karate-kid windup.
* '''Interesting!''' — Tiny head bob + knife-hand point. Reserved for borderline heaters that somehow found the zone.

=== Ball ===
* '''The Flat Denial''' — Open palm sweep outward, calm and final. No drama. The pitch was flat. Move on.
* '''The Horizon Drift''' — Subtle lateral hand drift at waist height; communicates "missed wide" without a TED Talk.

=== Foul tip ===
* '''The Sparky''' — Quick finger-flick off the catcher's mitt direction, then reset. Tiny. Cute. Correct.
* '''The Almost''' — Brief two-finger tap to the chest protector area (air only) then "Foul!" — acknowledges the nick without inventing contact.

=== Check swing ===
* '''The Appeal Jazz Hands''' — Point down the line to the base ump with both index fingers like you're summoning backup vocals. "Did he go?"
* '''The Half-Committed''' — Freeze mid-gesture yourself, then explode into the ruling once your partner answers. Meta comedy, zero delay.

=== Hit by pitch ===
* '''The Ice Pack Salute''' — Point to first, then a sympathetic two-finger tap to your own elbow. Empathy theater.
* '''The Take Your Base Ballet''' — Sweeping arm toward first with a half-bow. Batter earns the walk-and-wince.

== Safe / out ==

=== Out ===
* '''The Fist of Finality''' — Classic punch-out, but hold the fist a beat longer like a mic drop.
* '''The Jeranism Jet''' — Overhand punch with a sharp "''OUT!''" that could clear fog off a GoPro lens.
* '''The Cult Exit''' — Thumb over shoulder toward the dugout. "You're done here." Light wink energy only.

=== Safe ===
* '''The Safe Harbor''' — Both arms swept flat and wide; hold like airplane wings over open water.
* '''The Union Glacier Slide''' — Low, wide safe call with a tiny hop — celebrating the beat-out without joining the pile.

== Fair / foul / catch ==

=== Fair ball ===
* '''The Fairway Point''' — Dramatic point into fair territory with full extension. Commit. Sell it.
* '''The in-play Unfurl''' — Both hands open toward the diamond like revealing a map that is, inconveniently, a globe.

=== Foul ball ===
* '''The Boundary Brush''' — Chopping motion toward foul ground, crisp and bored — you've seen this before.
* '''The Not On My Watch''' — Point foul + slight head shake. Parents will quote it.

=== Catch ===
* '''The Pocket Seal''' — Fist closed high, then a short downward stab. "That's a catch."
* '''The Evidence Logged''' — Point at the fielder, then a clipboard-mime checkmark. Optional snark for highlight-reel snags.

=== No catch ===
* '''The Bobble Ballet''' — Open hands fluttering down — the ball was never controlled, and neither were your feelings about it.
* '''The Trap Door''' — Palm-down wave at the dirt. "On the ground. Play on."

=== Infield fly ===
* '''The Lazy Pop Sermon''' — Point skyward, then both arms out: "Infield fly! Batter's out!" Delivered like you've explained this rule to the same coach since 2015.
* '''The Automatic Out Halo''' — Circle finger above head, then the out punch. Educational ''and'' dramatic.

== Dead ball / time / play ==

=== Time / timeout ===
* '''The Freeze Frame''' — Both hands up, palms out, like the whole diamond just hit pause.
* '''The Conference Dome''' — Hands up + a tiny circular wave: "We're under the dome now. Nobody move."

=== Play ===
* '''The Restart Click''' — Point at pitcher + sharp "''Play!''" Energy of unmuting a livestream.
* '''The Horizon Go''' — Sweeping arm forward from the plate. Game's back. Sun's still up.

=== Hold / do not pitch ===
* '''The Stop Sign''' — Flat palm at the pitcher, full traffic-cop energy.
* '''The Not Yet''' — Palm out + slight wag. Protects the batter still tying shoes / adjusting feelings.

=== Delayed dead ball ===
* '''The Yellow Card Mime''' — Point the play live, then both hands briefly up once action ends. "We're fixing it… now."
* '''The Bookmark''' — Finger raised like "hold that thought," then the kill once runners settle.

== Specialty rulings ==

=== Balk ===
* '''The Gotcha Point''' — Sharp point at the pitcher + "''Balk!''" with the energy of catching a bad-faith clip.
* '''The Free Ninety''' — Point to the pitcher, then sweep runners up a base like you're upgrading their tickets.

=== Obstruction ===
* '''The Roadblock''' — Both arms crossed then flung open toward the obstructed runner's award. "You were in the way."
* '''The Right of Way''' — Point at the offender, then award bases with a tour-guide flourish.

=== Interference ===
* '''The Hands Off''' — Chopping motion + out call if applicable. "That's not helping."
* '''The Contaminated Play''' — Wave the play dead like wiping a whiteboard. Reset with authority.

=== Home run ===
* '''The Gone Gone Gone''' — Full index finger sky circle, then a two-handed send-off toward the fence.
* '''The Orbit''' — Finger spiral overhead — tasteful globe energy, not a TED Talk.
* '''The Souvenir Wave''' — Point over the wall, then a little "bye-bye" flap. Crowds eat this.

=== Ground-rule double ===
* '''The Two-Base Tango''' — Two fingers up, then point to second. Clear, loud, slightly disco.
* '''The Fence Kiss''' — Point at the wall drama, then the two-finger award. Narrates the bounce for everyone in left field who blinked.

=== Intentional walk signal ===
* '''The Royal Escort''' — Four fingers briefly shown (or the modern auto-IBB acknowledgment), then a grand sweep to first.
* '''The Skip the Drama''' — Casual point to first like "we all know where this is going."

== Counts, warnings, ejections ==

=== Count signals ===
* '''The Billboards''' — Left hand balls, right hand strikes, held high and still long enough for Grandma in section 4.
* '''The Clarity Combo''' — Flash the count, then a tiny nod to the catcher. Broadcast umpiring for the bleachers.
* '''The Full House Reset''' — On 3-2, both hands flash with a "everybody breathe" pause.

=== Warning ===
* '''The Yellow Horizon''' — Point at the offender, verbal warning, then a flat palm "that's enough." Documented in the invisible notebook of destiny.
* '''The First and Final''' — Two fingers shown to the dugout: strike one on sportsmanship.

=== Ejection ===
* '''The Classic Heave-Ho''' — Thumb over shoulder + "''You're gone!''" Hold the pose. Let the moment cook.
* '''The No Refund''' — Point at the ejected party, then a sweeping dismissal toward the parking lot / Antarctica shuttle joke only if the crowd is in on it.
* '''The Mic Drop Mask''' — Mask off (if wearing), point, eject, mask back. Pure theater. Use sparingly; umpires still need teeth.

== Appeals and misc. ==

=== Appeal ===
* '''The Summon''' — Open-hand invitation to the appealing team + attentive lean. Make them do it right.
* '''The Partnership''' — Point to your partner, then the base. Shared brain cell, public edition.

=== Fair/foul on a bunt or dribbler (plate ump specialty) ===
* '''The Laser Line''' — Knife-hand along the line, then the fair/foul decree. Geometry class, but louder.

=== Catcher's interference ===
* '''The Mitt Invasion''' — Point at catcher, award first. "That's a reach-in, not a pitch frame."

=== Runner's interference / abandoned effort ===
* '''The Shortcut Tax''' — Out call + point at the path they ''should'' have taken. Educational cruelty (rules version).

== Suggested set list (sample inning) ==
# Balls/strikes with '''Billboards''' counts.
# One '''Antarctica Freeze''' strike on a heater.
# A '''Safe Harbor''' on a bang-bang at first.
# If someone chirps from the dugout: '''Yellow Horizon''' before anything nuclear.
# Save '''Mic Drop Mask''' for the third "HE WAS SAFE" of the afternoon.
